Are you ready?

EXAMINE YOUR MOTIVATION. Dr. Gina N. Duncan says “In order to make changes, you have to find [the reason] within yourself.” Ask yourself questions. Am I at risk? Will I see my grandchildren grow up? What lifestyle do I want? Nothing happens unless you’re ready to make a change.

GET EDUCATED. Talk to a nutritionist or go to www.MyPyramid.gov to develop a personal eating plan for the foods that work for you. A healthy eating plan consists of a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, healthy fats and low-fat proteins. Your choices are personal. You select which healthy foods you prefer.

EXERCISE. At least 30 minutes five days a week in at least 10-minute intervals. Walking will do – even dancing. Walk in place indoors if you’re uncomfortable walking outside.

KEEP IT SIMPLE. Make small, sustainable changes. For instance, if you drink whole milk, switch to 2 percent milk. You probably will not notice a difference.

REMAIN MOTIVATED. Healthy living is a life-long transition, not a quick fix.
