How to get your D

Look to the sun
In general, five to ten minutes twice a week in the summer sun without sunscreen will make about 10,000 to 20,000 IU for those with fair skin. It will take a darker skinned person about six times that amount of time. Doctors recommend you put on sunscreen or cover up after the minutes in the sun.

Take a pill
If you prefer to avoid sun, supplements are required. New guidelines on daily required intake are forthcoming. Specialists in vitamin D recommend a minimum of 1,000 IU a day for optimal health. Your doctor can best advise you.
